Why I like it
If you’re serious about drivetrain efficiency and longevity, hot waxing is the gold standard — and the Silca Chain Waxing System makes it ridiculously easy. It heats wax to the perfect temperature, minimizes mess, and comes with thoughtful little touches (like a hanging handle) that make waxing clean and repeatable. I haven’t looked back since switching from traditional lube.
Quick Specs
- Custom-designed wax melting pot
- Integrated chain hanger for drip drying
- Compact and clean operation
- Works with Silca Super Secret Hot Melt Wax
In My Setup
- I rewax about every 3 long rides, after messy conditions, and always before races.
- Super easy to use — just set to minimum heat for regular waxing. Only use max heat when doing a new chain with a Strip Chip.
- Tip: Stick a small pin under the hanging cable handle to prop it up and prevent it from slipping into the wax. If the end breaks off, just crimp and tape the cable back on.
- Reuse wax easily — just pop the lid on between uses to keep dust out. Replace the wax after running 6 Strip Chips through it (roughly 6 new chains).
- Wax cleanup is super clean — the system catches all the drips.
Why It Matters
- Since switching to hot waxing, I’m going through way fewer chains and cassettes — even with a big mileage increase.
- Beginner friendly: As long as you can listen for a noisier drivetrain (your sign it’s time to rewax), you’ll get great results right away.
Notes
- Only wax one chain at a time, but it’s a fast process once you get the hang of it.
- Hot waxing is worth it for everyone, not just racers — it saves money, reduces maintenance headaches, and keeps your drivetrain crazy clean.
- Silca Super Secret Hot Melt Wax is my go-to for this system (full page coming soon!).
Buyer’s Tips
- Choose Your Wax: I use Silca Super Secret Hot Melt Blend for consistently fast, durable chains.
- Prepping a New Chain? Grab a Silca Strip Chip to easily strip factory grease on the first wax.
- Travel Friendly: The pot is small enough to throw in your race bag if you need to rewax on the road.
- Fixes Are Easy: If the chain hanger cable gets damaged, a simple cable crimp + electrical tape fix keeps it usable.
- Minimal Mess: Always set the pot to minimum heat during rewaxing — hotter isn’t better unless stripping a new chain.
- Longevity Tip: Replace your wax after about 6 full rewaxes (especially after 6 Strip Chip uses).
