Sea Otter Fuego XL — Time to Break Out the Fast Rubber

Packed and ready for Sea Otter: Rekon Race up front, Aspen ST out back.
If you’re racing the Sea Otter Fuego XL, the tire brief is refreshingly simple: go light, go fast, and don’t over-tire it.
This is not a course for knobby tires. Pick something that rolls as fast as you’re comfortable staying upright on and managing through some loose-over-hard corners at race speed.
This is one of the smoother marathon-style MTB races I’ve done. The course is built around fast fireroad, smooth singletrack, and gravel/pavement connectors, with only a little sandstone here and there. Flat risk is low, traction demands are very modest, and the main thing that catches people off guard… loose-over-hard and sandy corners that look firmer than they are.

Notes
- 1.
Rekon Race 2.4 ↗️ /
Aspen ST 2.4 ↗️ : The combo I raced in 2025. Plenty of front-end confidence, very fast rear tire, and no sense that I was giving up speed for security.
- 2.
Dubnital Race Rapid 2.4 ↗️ front / rear: Probably the fastest setup here if the course is dry and you want to go all-in on weight and speed. These are my top pick for this course at the moment. This tire is light, fast, and grips very well - it’s light race casing should hold up just fine in Fort Ord.
- 3.
Aspen ST 2.4 ↗️ front / rear: Another pure speed option. Very appropriate for this course if you know you’ll be comfortable in the corners.
- 4.
Kenda Rush Pro 2.4 ↗️ front / rear: Nice middle ground if you want to split the difference between something like a Rekon Race and an Aspen ST but we’re splitting hair here because these are all very fast tires.
- 5.
Aspen 2.4 ↗️ front / rear: My preferred weather hedge. Still fast, but a little more versatile if the forecast gets interesting due to it’s excellent mud shedding capabilities. - Other good fits:
Rekon Race 2.4 ↗️ front / rear if you want a more planted, confidence-first dry setup. I could also see a
Vittoria Mezcal 2.4 ↗️ / Peyote-style pairing making sense here if you want quick rolling with a touch more versatility than a pure dry-race tire.
Bottom line: Sea Otter is one of those races where it pays to resist the urge to bring extra tire. Go smooth and light - when you start that second 35 mile lap you’ll be glad you aren’t lugging around the extra weight.
Why Sea Otter Favors Fast Tires
Fuego XL rewards restraint, not extra tire.
Most of the day is spent on:
- fast fireroad
- smooth, flowing singletrack
- gravel and pavement connectors
- sandy or loose-over-hard corners that punish those braking hard in the corners
There’s a little sandstone, but not enough to justify extra protection. The real challenge is managing the tires you choose at race speed.

Maxxis Aspen ST 2.4 MaxxSpeed

Read the review →- System weight: ~85 kg
- Pressure: 12 PSI front / 13 PSI rear
- Inserts:
Vittoria Air-Liner Light ↗️ front / rear - Conditions: foggy, cold start; dry course; lots of loose-over-hard
The Rekon Race ↗️ gave me more than enough confidence up front while still rolling quickly on the course’s endless smooth sections. It remains one of my favorite front tires for dry racing because it gives you a little extra grip and composure without feeling draggy.
The Aspen ST ↗️ was exactly what I wanted out back: very fast, light-feeling, and perfectly at home on a course where you spend so much time covering ground on smooth terrain.
If anything, 2025 reinforced for me how little tire you really need at Sea Otter. I wouldn’t hesitate to consider something as low-profile as an Aspen ST front and rear next time.
The contrast with my first year here was pretty stark. In 2024, I raced Sea Otter on the stock Purgatory / Ground Control combo that came on my Epic 8, and it was clearly way too much tire for this course. I was also a very different racer by 2025, so it wasn’t just about tires, but the result was still a good reminder: Sea Otter really rewards a true XC race setup. I ended up a little over two hours faster in 2025.
Pressures, Inserts & Flat Risk
- Reference setup: ~85 kg rider + gear
- 2025 pressure: 12F / 13R PSI
- Inserts:
Air-Liner Light ↗️ front / rear - Sealant: fresh
Orange Seal Endurance ↗️
I ran inserts at Sea Otter mostly out of habit. On this course, you really don’t need them the way you might at rougher races. They’re still fine insurance, but the bigger point is this:
There isn’t much puncture risk out there.
That also means you can usually go as low on pressure as you’re comfortable with. Rim-strike risk is very low here, and those lower pressures help you squeeze a little more grip out of fast-rolling tires in the loose-over-hard and sandy corners.
That opens the door to extremely light tires like the Dubnital Race Rapid ↗️ , 170 TPI
Aspen STs ↗️ , or other very speed-focused options that might feel too vulnerable elsewhere.

- Keegan Swenson has won here in past years on Aspen STs, back when the Fuego XL was the MTB Grand Prix race rather than the gravel race.
- Alexey Vermeulen finished 2nd in 2024 on 2.2 Kenda Rush TRs aboard his hardtail Factor Lando.

Final Takeaways
If you’re coming to Sea Otter on stock downcountry or trail tires, there’s a good chance you’re bringing more tire than the course needs.
Think fast casing, low tread, low pressure, and just enough front-end confidence to stay honest in the sandy corners. More often than not, the right answer here is to run the fastest tire you can still trust when the course gets a little loose at speed.
And beyond the tire choice, Sea Otter is just a really fun race environment. The expo is worth checking out, Monterey and Carmel are absolutely worth building extra time around, and Fort Ord is a beautiful place to ride. Take in the coast, enjoy the views, and have fun out there.
