Why I like it
The Aspen ST is a rocketship on hardpack and short track XC courses. With a nearly slick center tread and supportive side knobs, it’s built for ultra-low rolling resistance and surprising cornering confidence. When it does let go, it’s predictable — and for how low-profile the tread is, it hooks up better than you’d think.
Quick Specs
- 2.4” width
- MaxxSpeed compound
- Semi-slick tread
- Lightweight and race-tuned
In My Setup
- I run the Aspen ST as a rear tire when every watt counts — especially on smoother courses where traction isn’t the limiting factor.
- It was perfect at Moab Rocks, where slickrock offers near-perfect grip and speed matters more than knobs.
- I use the 170 TPI version for all-out race days, but prefer the 120 TPI version for more rugged terrain — better flat protection with only a minor weight tradeoff.
- The Backcountry listing carries the 170 TPI casing, but for chunkier courses, I recommend buying direct from Maxxis for the 120 TPI version.
Who It’s For
XC racers focused on maximum speed and minimum drag. If the course is dry, fast, and relatively smooth — or something like Moab where the terrain grips for you — the ST can make the difference in a sprint finish.
Notes
- With such low tread, good line choice matters on loose-over-hardpack — but if it’s tacky or hero dirt, it holds its own.
- I often pair it with a standard Aspen 2.4 or a Rekon Race up front for a balanced mix of grip and speed.
