Why I like it
The Rekon Race absolutely rips on dry, gnarly terrain. It’s a fast-rolling XC tire with surprising edge grip and a lot more bite than you’d expect from the low-profile tread. It feels planted in technical corners and really shines on dry, dusty, or hardpack trails. Just don’t take it into the wet — it packs up fast.
Quick Specs
- 2.4” width (recommended — link goes to 2.25”)
- MaxxSpeed compound
- 120 TPI casing preferred
- Great braking & cornering traction
In My Setup
- I run the Rekon Race front and rear on tricky, dry courses when I want a mix of speed and confidence in corners and descents.
- On something like the Breck Epic, I might run an Ikon up front and Rekon Race in the rear for an ultra-smart combo of fast rolling and technical grip.
- I prefer the 120 TPI version — it’s more durable for rough courses. The affiliate link is for 2.25” (Backcountry), but you can often grab the 2.4” direct from Maxxis here.
Who It’s For
XC racers who want a rear tire that doesn’t give up on grip. If you’re tired of rear tires slipping or squirming in corners or under braking, the Rekon Race is a major upgrade — and still rolls really fast.
Notes
- More braking and cornering traction than the Aspen or Aspen ST.
- Still super fast rolling — like a mini trail tire in XC skin.
- Use the Silca Tire Pressure Calculator — I run around 12–13 PSI on smooth, up to 16–18 PSI for chunky, always with Vittoria Airliners.
