Why I Like It
Skratch’s High-Carb Mix has been my go-to for both training and racing. I mix it full-strength—7 scoops per bottle or 14 in my 2L hydration pack—and it consistently delivers 400 calories per bottle without any GI issues. Whether it’s 1-hour intensity or a full-on sufferfest like the El Paso Puzzler, this stuff keeps me fueled when eating solid food just isn’t realistic.
It’s especially useful on techy or rough courses where gels are tricky to grab. On my Epic 8 (which holds two bottles), I’ll often run this in one bottle and a lighter electrolyte mix in the other so I can back off on carbs or sodium as needed and supplement with chews/gels.

In My Setup
- 7 scoops go into a 24oz Camelbak Podium Bottle ↗, 14 scoops in a 2L bladder if I’m running one.
- I aim for 100g carbs and 1L fluid per hour, unless it’s really cold then those numbers might go down a little.
- I often supplement sodium by adding a PH 1500 tablet ↗ to each bottle for ~1150mg sodium total.
- For big refuel moments (e.g. aid station), I sometimes carry the single-serve pouches in my pockets.
- I’ve used this mix in hot and humid Austin training and at high elevation races—never had gut issues.
Tips
- Mixing hack: Fill bottle halfway, add scoops, shake hard, then top off. Otherwise it can clump.
- For variety, I run a second bottle that’s just electrolyte + water and time my gels separately.
- Keeping this mix cold with ice (especially in your Podium bottles ↗) makes a big difference on hot days.
- If you start getting behind on fueling, this stuff actually tastes better—like your body knows it needs it.
