Why I like them
Shimano’s XTR PD-M9100 pedals are my go-to clipless option for XC racing. They’re rock solid, incredibly reliable, and clear mud well even in super nasty conditions. The engagement feels smooth and satisfying with a positive “chonk” as you clip in — and unclipping is always predictable when you need it most.
The low-profile body helps reduce pedal strikes on rocks and roots, which is huge when you’re threading techy climbs or ripping rocky descents.
Quick Specs
- SPD two-bolt design
- Low stack height
- Adjustable entry/release tension
- Excellent mud clearance
- Lightweight XC-specific construction
In My Setup
- I run the PD-M9100 pedals year-round for training and racing.
- Mud clearing is excellent — even after hike-a-bike through nasty mud pits, they keep working.
- No service needed yet after a full hard season of use (although I probably should service them soon).
- Clip feel is fantastic — light but positive engagement and release.
- The low profile makes a noticeable difference when riding chunky, rocky terrain — fewer pedal strikes!
- I haven’t used the XT version personally, but they are a little heavier — the XTRs feel worth the investment for racing.
Who It’s For
XC racers and riders who want the absolute best blend of lightweight, durability, low-profile design, and all-conditions reliability in a clipless pedal. They’re race-proven and ready to handle whatever you throw at them.
Notes
- Be mindful to set your cleat tension based on new cleats — if you adjust for worn ones, the new ones might feel too tight!
- I’d absolutely choose these again if I were building a new race bike today.
